On Friday February 7, 2014 at about noon, the Longwood Fire Company was dispatched to 512 Kennett Pike for an odor investigation inside. The address is home to a business that operates in an old 2.5 story house. The original 911 caller stated the interior of the business smelled like smoke but they weren't sure where it was coming from. Engine 25-1 made the response and arrived with nothing showing. However, when they entered the business and made their way to the second floor, they found the walls covered in soot from top to bottom. Chief 25 radioed back to the Chester County Fireboard advising there was a fire in the walls and requested the working fire dispatch.

The Hockessin Fire Company (New Castle County Station 19), the Kennett Fire Company (Station 24) and the Goodwill Fire Company (Station 52) were added to the assignment. The Engine Crew quickly opened the wall and extinguished the remaining fire. While checking the remainer of the second floor, the crew found that every room on the floor had floor to ceiling smoke damage. The fire burned so hot, it melted the smoke detector and window blinds. However, because the fire consumed all of the available oxygen, it eventually snuffed itself out. Had the fire found a secondary source of oxygen, it is possible that the entire second floor and roof would have gone up in flames.

With the fire quickly contained, Chief 25 directed Engine 52-1 to our station and had them stand by to handle second calls in our district until the remaining units were available. Engine 24-1 and Engine 19-5 responded to the scene to assist with overhauling the second floor. The fire was determined to be an electrical malfunction related to the ice storm. Once the Chester County Fire Marshal completed his investigation, all units cleared the scene.

Units: Engine 25-1, Ladder 25, Utility 25

Mutual Aid: Station 24, Station 52, Station 19 (DE)
