| On Friday April 8th Longwood Fire Company was dispatched to an accident with entrapment at the intersection of Rte 1 and W. Pennsbury Way a little after 5pm. The MICU responded about a minute later and was advised of the 2 vehicle accident, 1 patient trapped and one vehicle into a utility pole. Deputy 25 (Bisson) and Rescue 25 (LaBare) responded about the time the MICU arrived onscene and confirmed 1 trapped. Engine 25-2 (Ruoss) responded shortly after. Upon arrival, Deputy 25 took Rte 1 Command and instructed the Rescue to stabilize the scene and begin extrication of the patient. Crews stabilized the car with wood cribbing, covered the patient with a blanket (for protection), removed all of the glass that remained and began to remove the doors. Engine 2 arrived and assisted on the driver's side, where most of the damage was. After the 4 doors and the hatch were removed, crews then cut the roof off to allow better access for EMS crews to package and remove the patient for transport. Extrication was completed just over 20 minutes after the first fire units arrived on scene. Crews cleaned up all of the Hurst equipment while waiting for tow trucks, and all fire apparatus cleared the scene around 6:15pm. Special thanks to West Chester, Avondale, Kennett Square and Concordville fire police for directing traffic around the scene while crews operated. |
