Longwood Fire Company joins neighbors in supporting owners of Deneno Farm!
Longwood responds to multiple fires during Sunday and Monday
POCOPSON _ Members of the Longwood Fire Company and neighbors established temporary shelters for the seven retired racehorses surviving a fire Sunday morning that killed two horses and destroyed a 150-year-old barn.
“Longwood serves a wonderful community,” Longwood Fire Company Chief A. J. McCarthy said. “Neighbors raised money and offered support for the owners of the Deneno Farm on Wawaset Farm Road. I’m also proud of the way members of Longwood Fire Company responded to the Deneno fire and the other fires on Sunday and Monday. They provided valuable service to their community.”
Two firefighters and two civilians, including retired horse trainer Don Deneno, received injuries. The barn contained two apartments. Tenants were uninjured.
Weather conditions made fighting the fire a hazard. The National Weather Service had issued a Red Flag Warning cautioning people that conditions were dry and windy, which can cause fires to quickly develop and rapidly spread.
For Longwood, Sunday was an extremely busy day. Just before noon multiple Longwood units responding to a building fire on Newark Road in West Marlborough. Smoke was seen from the large barn several miles from the fire that endangered an outbuilding and tractor trailers.
About an hour later, a second call was received for the Deneno barn fire. Again, multiple Longwood units responded. A large two- story barn was fully involved and approximately six-to-eight acres of woods and field were on fire. Embers from the barn fire were igniting brush fires in the surrounding area due to winds.

Arriving companies worked together to lay close to 3,000-feet of supply line and establish a tanker shuttle to supply water to the scene. While crews worked to extinguish the barn fire, other units contained the spreading brush fire. After placing the fire under control, units were on scene for several hours extinguishing hot spots.

The day wasn’t finished for Longwood. While cleaning up equipment at the barn fire, Longwood responded to two additional brush fires in the afternoon. All Longwood Fire Company units were restored and back in service around 9:00 p.m.

On Monday, after spending most of the day cleaning up equipment from Sunday’s fires, Longwood units were called to Kennett Township to assist on a garage fire.
Members of Longwood Fire Company joined neighbors in erecting the shelters for the horses with material donated by Fence Works and Fence Authority. Horse feed was donated and Ace Hardware Store accepted donations for the Deneno Farm.
