| It's that time of the year again- spring yardwork, gardening, and cleaning up a lot of limbs brought down from the winter storms. The Longwood Fire Company encourages residents to compost and recycle yard wastes when possible. If you would like to burn your yard waste, general and township specific information is outlined below for the four townships the LFC serves. Please be safe and smart when burning this year and contact your township with any additional questions. For emergencies, dial 911.
Burning is not permitted from dusk until dawn in the state of PA and the burning of hazardous materials, trash, construction debris, etc is never allowed. Burning of yard waste can never cause a public disturbance. In addition to the individual township requirements outlined below, all residents are required to notify Chester County at the non-emergency line at 610-436-4703 prior to burning. Residents should always use good judgment when burning and avoid burning during very dry periods, on windy days, keep piles small and in a safe area, and never add accelerants to a fire. The Longwood Fire Company has the right to extinguish any controlled burn if requirements are not met or if the burn poses a threat to life or environment, or causes a public disturbance.
Individual township requirements are:
Kennett Twp, www.kennett.pa.us: Open burn during month of April for yard waste. Residents must have permit from the township.
Pocopson Twp, www.pocopson.org: Several days of township chipping services are provided. Residents are encouraged to utilize this free recycling service, check township website for information. Aside from that, burning of yard waste is permitted, provided that a permit is obtained from the township, piles are minimum of 50 feet from any structure and monitored by an adult, and an adequate water supply is at the burn site to extinguish the fire if needed.
Pennsbury Twp, www.pennsbury.pa.us: Burning of yard wastes allowed during safe conditions.
East Marlborough Township, www.eastmarlborough.org: Residents are encouraged to recycle yard waste by either bringing it to the township building and placing out back, or transporting to the SECCRA site on 926. Chipping service is also provided for limbs which have fallen as a result of storm damage, but not for branches and debris which have been pruned or cut. Call 610-444-1375 to arrange chipping.
Burning of yard waste is allowed, but smoke is not permitted to enter an adjacent property or cause a public disturbance. |
