May 3, 2010

At 1814hrs the Company was dispatched on the first alarm assignment to assist Station 36 (Po-Mar-Lin) on a house fire. The initial report from the homeowner was they had fire showing from the house.

Chief 36 (Wells) arrived with a working fire in the attic and established Mitchell Farm Command. Ladder 25 (McCarthy) responded with four firefighters and was instructed to ventilate the roof. Ladder 25 arrived and positioned on the A/D corner of the structure. The exterior team threw portable ladders to the A,C and D sides of the building. The interior crew operated on the second floor opening up the ceilings. As the ladder crew operated on the second floor with the engine crew from 36, the well advanced fire began to take control of the entire attic and second floor as well as the exterior of the C side. With conditions deteriorating quickly and the possibility of a collapse, Command evacuated the building.

E-25-1 (Cressman) arrived and set up the water supply at the end of the driveway. Multiple tankers supplied the portable tank for the suppression operation. Ladder 25 went into service with the ladder pipe to knock down the attic and roof. Crews then re-entered the building and completed the extinguishment and overhaul.

Micu 25-2 and Amb 23-2 established rehad on the A side of the house.

Due to the extensive overhaul and salvage work, crews from Longwood Fire Co, Po-Mar-Lin Fire Co, Kennett Fire Co #1, First West Chester Fire Co #1 and Cochranville Fire Co were rotated on the first and second floors.

Chief 25 (Ruoss) was appointed as the Operations Chief.

Assistant 25 (McCarthy) was appointed as the Division 2 supervisor.

Chief 22 (Weer) was appointed as the Water Supply Officer.

The incident is being investigated by the Chester County Fire Marshall's Office and is believed to be accidental in nature.
