On Saturday April 6 at about 0707 hours, the Longwood Fire Company and an ambulance from the Kennett Fire Company were dispatched to Route 52 north of Route 1 for the accident with injuries. Chief 25 arrived first and reported a two vehicle accident blocking the road with one person still in the vehicle. Rescue 25 (B. McCarthy) responded with 5 members and upon arrival sent cross trained FF/EMT Mickey Shone to the vehicle to begin caring for the injured driver. The remainder of the crew began setting up a staging area should the patient require extrication. Career EMT Steve Nuse arrived on Engine 25-2 and assisted FF/EMT Shone with patient care. The driver of the vehicle began complaining of neck and back pain so the decision was made to perform a full extrication. LT 25-A assumed the Operations and the Rescue and Engine crews split and worked on opposite sides of the car. The crews spent the next 16 minutes removing the windows, windshield, doors and roof of the vehicle so the driver could be secured to a backboard and removed from the vehicle. The driver was then transported to the Crozer-Chester Medical Center for further treatment and evaluation. The crews remained on scene until Robert's towing arrived and removed the vehicles. Route 52 was reopened at 0823 hours and the company was made available.
