Mark your calendars this fall for two sets of important dates.

Oct. 4-10 is Fire Prevention Week.

And Sunday, Oct. 11 is Longwood Fire Company's annual open house.

Fire Prevention Week has been observed each October since 1922, according to the Web site of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), which can be found at www.nfpa.org. This year's theme is "Stay Fire Smart! Don't Get Burned" and is geared toward educating people about burns and how to prevent them.

During Fire Prevention Week, Longwood Fire Company's firefighters and emergency personnel will visit area schools and talk to students about fire prevention.

For more information about what you can do to become more fire-savvy, please check out the "Safety" portion of our Web site at www.longwoodfireco.com/content/safety. There are links to municipal burn ordinances, as well as information about cooking, electrical and holiday safety, to name a few.

Longwood Fire Company's open house will be held from noon to 4 p.m. on Oct. 11 and will build on the lessons of Fire Prevention Week. Visitors to the fire station at 1001 East Baltimore Pike in Kennett Township can explore the fire trucks and ambulances, learn what firefighters and emergency medical personnel do, and see first-hand the dangers of fire and how to respond in an emergency situation.

Other highlights will include a bake sale and a chance to peruse the clothing and other items in LFC's store.
