Over the past year it became quite apparent that we needed to replace our wood cribbing carried on our rescue-engine and rescue squad.

Cribbing is a process used during motor vehicle collisions to stabilize a vehicle to ensure that a patient's injures are not aggravated by the movement of a vehicle during the extrication. By utilizing the wood cribbing against the frame of a vehicle, you remove the suspension creating a solid, non-moving platform to safely extricate and package an injured party.

In 2000, Pocopson Industries, Inc donated a large quantity of wood for the company to use on rescue incidents. As our apparatus grew in size as well as the number of incidents that require us to stabilize vehicles, we again asked our neighbor to help us mitigate our need for new wood.

Capt. McCarthy and Past Deputy Chief Kevin Coyle contacted Pocopson Industries to solicit a donation. Pocopson Industries (www.timberworks.com) was founded in 1988 and is a world leader in the design and manufacture of innovative and large scale structural timber systems.

Deputy Chief Coyle was provided a large list of required lengths and dimensions. After a few weeks of preparation, Deputy Chief Coyle delivered almost 3,000 board feet of laminated wood. The new laminated wood weighs 1/2 the total weight of Oak, but has twice the weight rating.

The members of the company spent two weeks measuring, cutting and storing the new cribbing on the apparatus.

The Officers and Members of the Longwood Fire Company would like to thank Pocopson Industries for their gracious donation and their assistance with helping us keep our community safe and Past Deputy Chief Kevin Coyle facilitating the donation.
