For the past two weeks the members of Longwood and Po-Mar-Lin Fire Companies have been taking the PA State Fire Academy class in Bus Rescue. This class, taught by Instructor Jeff Kramer from the Chester County Fire Academy, is designed to teach the membership on strategy and tactics to perform bus extrication.

The members attended two classroom lectures on Nov 16th and 23rd. These lectures taught vehicle anatomy, the different class designations of the school bus, strategy, tactics and hazards when performing these rescue operations.

On 11-28-09 the class ended with a practical session that involved using hydraulic and other mechanical equipment to effect an extrication of trapped victims. The rescue crews performed several scenarios as well as tested a few new techniques to better prepare ourselves for this type of operations.

The Longwood Fire Company would like to thank the Unionville-Chadds Ford School District for donating a retired school bus, the Chester County Fire Academy for the excellent instruction and the Po-Mar-Lin Fire Company for hosting the class at their facility as well as providing lunch.

Units: Rescue Squad 25 and E-25-2
